The Roof

Replacing the roof
Replacing the roof was one of the major tasks of the build. Our original plan had been to replace the roof on the whole length of the building, but unfortunately after some of our other quotes had come in over estimate we lacked the funds to be able to do it all.

The original roof came off in the summer of 2010. All of the original tiles proved to be rotten and could not be re-used. All of the beams were the same - you could put your finger through most of them!

The new roof went on with plenty of insulation so should keep the building warm and dry. Bits of it had to removed to fit the Velux windows and it wasn't completely finished until May 2011!    more ...

The Rear Wall

The rear wall being rebuilt
Our first major hiccup occured with the rear wall of the building. It was first brought to our attention by a note in our planning permission which stated that we must attend to the state of the rear wall. The building backs on to land owned by the CMPP (Centre Médico Psycho Pédagogique) and the Marie. The CMPP was a fairly recent build and obviously when their building was being built the bulges on our rear wall caused them some concern. They put fencing around it to keep people away. We thought nothing of it as it all seemed pretty stable; there were no signs of any collapses or recent movement in the wall.

However our builder did have a problem. When it came to replacing the roof he discovered that he would have to replace some of the large stones at the top of the wall as some had crumbled. But if he did this we risked the wall collapsing.    more ...

Windows

New windows in the Gîte
All of the windows had to be replaced of course but we were keen to retain the openings as they were originally. Of course this meant that we had to have the windows custom-made as they just don't make them like that anymore!

We also decided to keep the window frames made of wood, to keep the project authentic. We expect this will mean a little more maintenance but they are far more in keeping with the building.

We also replaced the original roof window in the roof with a Velux window, along with adding one on the end elevation. The only concession we had to make to 'Batiments de France' in their planning consent was to ensure that the windows were 'tabatiere' type windows. These are ones that don't quite sit flush to the roof but sit in a frame.    more ...

Outside Spaces

The Gîte garden
The Gîte benefits from a covered games room and its own section of the garden. During construction this 'games room' was used as a storage area for the builders, as well as a place to retreat if the weather wasn't good enough to work outside. With a table and chairs in there it was even used as a 'canteen' at lunchtime!

The garden for the Gîte is found behind the Petite Maison in the garden. It won't be fenced off but does offer complete privacy from the main house. It was a little overgrown when we started but we've turned it into a nice area in which to relax, where you can pick your own fruit from the trees and bushes growing there.    more ...

The Outside

The front of the Gîte

La Source Tranquille
The outside (front) of the gîte was in a pretty good state. Apart from having to replace the windows and doors we've done little to the facade itself. Because we've raised the floor of the gîte however we have had to do a lot to the pathway.

We've raised the outside by around 25cm, taking up the original cobbles that were there and re-used them at the new level. We even uncovered another stream, like the one in the garden, that runs directly under the gîte itself! We did toy with the idea of putting a bridge over it and making it a feature but decided against it in the end for safety's sake.

There was orginally a stone 'wall', more just a stack of stones in a line separating the rose bed from the path, but with them both now being at the same level we've had to just lay the stones on the top of the soil to separate the two.

We've also added lights to the front of the gîte to light the path.    more ...
