Lovers of flowers and roses, welcome to Gerberoy. Known as the "village of a thousand rose bushes", this charming little town, one of the « Plus beaux villages de France », offers a wonderful sensory experience. Climbing roses, hydrangeas, wisteria, daisies and other plants... an explosion of scents and a festival of colours await you! The painter Le Sidaner fell in love with this village and created superb terraced gardens on the very ruins of the 19th-century castle. The cobbled lanes, old cob houses with colourful timber work from the 17th and 18th centuries, ramparts and Charlemagne Tower add a certain cachet to the village. Not to mention the mini-vineyard, full of undeniable rural charm. Every first weekend in June, the village hosts the Rose Festival, an unmissable event with a delightfully festive and romantic atmosphere.

Auvers-sur-Oise

During the 19th century, a number of painters lived and worked in Auvers-sur-Oise, including Paul Cézanne, Charles-François Daubigny, Camille Pissarro, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Norbert Goeneutte, and Vincent van Gogh. Daubigny's house is now a museum where one can see paintings by the artist, his family, and friends, such as Honoré Daumier, as well as rooms decorated in period style. Along the river walk from Auvers toward Pontoise are a number of views which figured in the paintings of Pissarro. During the 20th century artists continued to frequent Auvers, including Henri Rousseau (Douanier Rousseau), Otto Freundlich and Pierre Daboval. The COBRA artist Corneille spent his last years in the village and is buried a few metres from Vincent van Gogh.

Monet's Garden

Claude Monet's house and garden is in the village of Giverny to the north west of Paris. The garden is simply stunning, visit if you can! Claude Monet's garden at Giverny is probably the most famous garden in France. 500 000 people visit every year. Monet painted some of his most famous paintings whilst living at Giverny. These included as his water lily and Japanese bridge paintings. Monet lived in Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926. The garden itself is in two parts with a flower garden in front of the house and the more famous water gardens were started ten years after Monet's arrival at Giverny and constructed on land bought on the other side of the road from his house. Interestingly locals were originally opposed to his plans to build water gardens, fearful that the strange plants would poison the water of the tributary feeding the ponds. The flower gardens cover about a hectare and are laid out in colour themed, borders. There are literally thousands of flowers in these gardens including masses of tulips, irises, oriental poppies and peonies - plants with wonderful colours providing an inspiration to Monet's paintings. The water gardens have a Japanese theme and there is a replica of the Japanese bridge which featured in Monet's famous paintings. As well as visiting the gardens you can visit Monet's lovely, and very colourful house. It is fairly simple in style but filled with warmth, colour and paintings.
