Château de Compiègne

The Musée National du château de Compiègne encompasses three museums in one as well as the main château and its gardens; les apartements historiques (historical apartments), Le Musée du Second Empire (the Museum of the Second Empire) and Le Musée de la voiture (the Museum of the car). The château was originally built as a Royal residence in the 14th Century with continued development until Louis XV decided to have it rebuilt in the eighteenth century. It was one of three seats of government, along with Fontainebleau and Versailles. The revolution heralded further changes with Napolean I having it restored until eventually it became a museum in 1870. The historic apartments are decorated as they were in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. There are rooms dating from the royal era in the eighteenth century along with others from the imperial era. The Musée du Second Empire contains important items from the later half of the nineteenth century, with painting and sculptures as well as other objets d'art. The Musée National de la Voiture et du Tourisme was inaugurated in 1927 and covers 3200 sq m. It features 75 two and four wheel vehicles from the eighteenth and nineteenth century, along with 31 motorised vehicles, and bicycles dating dating from their origin to the present day. The museums and château are open every day except Tuesdays, from 6.50€ per person (the parc is free).

Bienvenue dans un château des 15 ème et 16 ème siècles, meublés, dont l'histoire vous surprendra. En effet, Troissereux a une histoire bimillénaire et le château a en lui-même une architecture très particulière. Il possède une tour alchimique, qui est en même temps une tour du temps, dans laquelle se trouvait une horloge médiévale, aujourd'hui exposée dans la chapelle. l'architecture de la tour est-elle même surprenante : ronde à la base, elle est surmontée d'un espace carré puis d'un espace triangulaire. Sur réservation, le château est ouvert aux visites toute l'année.

Chateau de Pierrefonds

The Château de Pierrefonds was originally built in the 12th Century with additions by the Duke of Orléans in the 15th Century. It was partially destroyed in the 17th Century on the orders of Richelieu, although his troops didn't finish it off as it was too big a job! The Château remained a ruin until Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (later Napoleon III of France) visited it in 1850 and asked Viollet-le-Duc to undertake its restoration. Whilst Napoleon envisaged the creation of an imperial palace money soon ran out and after his death the reconstruction was scaled back somewhat. What does remain though is a fabulous facsimilie of a 14th Century French defensive castle. Nowadays the Château is open for visits with a walk along the ramparts offering a fabulous view over the surrounding countryside. Many of the rooms have been sumptiously redecorated and there is a working lead workshop, recreating for sale some of the decorations which have been made for centuries for some of the leading architects of France. The town of Pierrefonds is also a lovely place to visit, offering healing baths in the natural waters, and boating on the lake. There is a lovely restaurant with views out over the water from which you can see the house Alexandre Dumas lived in, having been born in the village next door. More recently the Château has been used for filming such works as Merlin for the BBC and The Joan of Arc story. The Château is open all year The Château sits in a park, featuring extensive parterres and water features, which was laid out principally by André Le Nôtre. It also contains a French landscape garden with a cascade, pavilions, and a rustic ersatz village, the Hameau de Chantilly, which inspired the Hameau de la reine of Marie Antoinette in the Gardens of Versailles. The estate overlooks the Chantilly Racecourse and the Grandes Écuries (Great Stables) which contains the Living Museum of the Horse. According to legend, Louis Henri, Duc de Bourbon, Prince of Condé believed that he would be reincarnated as a horse after his death. In 1719, he asked the architect, Jean Aubert to build stables suitable to his rank. These 186m long stables are considered by some as the most beautiful in the world. The Château has been in the public eye in recent years, with concerts by Pink Floyd in the nineties, a part in the James Bond film 'A View to a kill', and it has played host to celebrity weddings including Ronaldo's in 2005.

The Château de Chantilly is an historic château located in the town of Chantilly. The Grand Château was destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s, being donated to the Institut de France by the owner, the Duc d'Aumale upon his death. Patrt of his bequest was the the château continued to house the Duc's extensive art collection after his death, and to remain open to the public. Today that art collection is shown in the Musée Condé, which is one of the finest art galleries in France, with paintings by Botticelli and Raphael. The Petit Château next door houses many original manuscripts and books, including a Gutenburg Bible.
